PRINT /PACKAGING & EXPERIENCE
AN EXPERIENCE WITH PRINT
With the rise of the digital age, there is very much still a place for print, whether it’s advertising, billboard or even bank cards, we can’t forget whats in front of us doesn’t have to be digital.
The newspaper has seen better days but with evolving technologies, we can harness new experiences with print alongside our screens.
Digital layout and how we interact with media does play a big part in changing the way we interact with in-person print, influencers for example are seen wearing merchandise or placing stickers on drink bottles and suddenly you have a bunch of followers wanting to have the same product.
In my experience, I’ve used Indesign for spreads and layout formations for a variety of things online and off.
I love seeing the final print of anything from its original digital phase. We can create something physically marveling to hold.
Packaging
Packaging fascinates me in that something won’t look completely right until the final product is folded, stuffed and glued together. The complete packaging from start to finish is a journey, the cuts the crevasses and the special inks to help the product inside look that much better.
Next time you pick up a unique product, even an embossed bottle. The designs and expense some companies go to for that extra mile of detail really make an impact on the consumer.
My Time in Prepress
Away from tiny print shops and into mass commercial quality printing. This was a journey I enjoyed and learnt a lot of respect for the printing process.
Starting on the factory floor I had to learn the ins and outs of each machine. The different process each print piece goes through and how every department keeps track of their part and where the job travels to next towards its completion.
After the various processes of cutting of these sheets and folding I was given the task of helping feed the sections and pages of books and magazines through a binding machine. stitching the books and calendars together which itself was a tedious process to get right for each different measurement.
The publications in a warehouse setting just before packing and shipping was the perfect place to start, this was to gain experience from the process of digital to print. Then I moved to more of the digital side of things in prepress which was a lot of making sure everything was approved before it set out to print. These involves so many different factors. I began helping operate platemaker machines (lithography) to transfer digital images that were setup in 8up 16up page spreads etc, these metal plates would tell the ink channels CMYK where on the paper spread they needed to be with extreme accuracy.

Custom Shirt Design & other Print Media
What’s better than designing your own look.
It has been so much fun designing different illustrations and bring them to shirts, stickers, magnets and mouse pads.
When I first opened up an Etsy shop I promoted it through Instagram, Facebook, on the Etsy site itself and word of mouth. I wasn’t immediately expecting to make a profit but was selling two shirts a week and a lot of stickers to students.
It brings so much joy to hear so many happy customers and whether this is just a fun thing on the side or I take it to different heights at least it’s something fulfilling.
